Anacostia Canoe Trip FULL TRIP NOW CLOSED
October 2 from 12 - 3 pm
MEET AT CHESTERTOWN AT 11:30
In the 1980s, the Anacostia River was written off as hopelessly polluted. Today, the river's condition has upgraded from critical to very serious, with a prognosis that it is becoming cleaner and healthier thanks to the determination of the Anacostia Watershed Society, community members, and other organizations who actively collaborate with us in the restoration of the watershed. The Anacostia has changed dramatically over the last 400 years – from a place of quiet natural abundance and American Indian settlements to a colonial seaport and bustling corridor in the nation’s capital. Join Staff from AWA as we paddle down the river from a public park, through industry, wildlife sites and public infrastructure to see all the many sides of our local river.
PRE-TRIP ASSIGNMENT

UMD Power Plant and Energy System Tour FULL TRIP NOW CLOSED
October 21st, 5-7pm
MEET AT CHESTERTOWN AT 4:30
The university currently draws most of its electricity from the on-campus combined heat and power plant. The plant uses natural gas, a nonrenewable resource that is often hailed as a clean alternative because it does emits 50 to 60 percent less carbon dioxide than coal. Gas also has a lower footprint for both transportation and mining impact, but as we know from class, zero impact is not no impact. As our campus works towards energy sustainability, get a first hand tour, of the very workings, mechanical and engineering systems that supply energy to our campus, and how/where it is moving in the future.
PRE-TRIP ASSIGNMENT
Explore the EIA.gov site on Natural Gas, Write an ~500 word position paper on what role natural gas should play in our energy sector, Answer, its pros, cons, political motiviations, and at least one alternative fuel source for the university to look into.
Second years, your proposal should be ~800 words, include elements from class, as well as 2 academic citations.
(If you wrote a previously stated 100 word reflection, and have already turned it in, please email me so I may count your work correctly. If this dose note make sense to you, do not worry, it does not pertain)

Patapsco Valley State Park Day Hike FULL TRIP NOW CLOSED
November 5th 11:00-2:00
MEET AT CHESTERTOWN AT 10:20
One way to engage with the environment around you is on the trail, to observe intentionally – take note of what might be the same or different within your field of vision along the trail. If you notice something particularly interesting, you can stop and check it out or make a mental note to investigate your observation when you get home. Pay attention to that undercurrent of curiosity. Often people get distracted by a “to-do list”. Gotta run, gotta finish the hike in time for a shower, go get groceries, get to the meeting, make dinner, check e-mails, return that call. Try to pay attention to that passing observation or question. “What’s that tree?” or “What’s that interesting rock over there?”. Stopping to read the forested landscape like a book, tells you the history of the land, its health, its issues, who lives there and the drama that unfolds.
PRE-TRIP ASSIGNMENT
Please explore this page Choose three benefits from hiking that you think you can incorporate into your life, and write a short response on why you are interested in them, about half a page single spaces, or around 500 words.
Second years, Please read this Article and provide a reflection of ~800 words, with the above prompt as well.
